THUNDER BAY — The Lakehead Region Conservation Authority has cancelled plans for "Meet a Mermaid Day" this weekend.

Last month, the LRCA invited the public to come to the Silver Harbour Conservation Area in Shuniah to see several life-sized concrete mermaid statues that were to be placed underwater at a scuba dive park just offshore.

But the authority now says the June 7th event has been cancelled due to "logistics and staffing issues," and that the statues—donated by local artist Luc Despres—will no longer be installed at Silver Harbour.

The LRCA is still inviting people to attend Silver Harbour Day on July 26.

Wally Peterson of Thunder Country Diving has said the dive park, which already contains a number of sunken boats, has the potential to attract visitors from across Canada.

It is believed to be the only scuba dive park operated by an Ontario watershed management agency.
