The jury for the Mervin Spence trial took a step closer to a verdict when they were excused from the courtroom Wednesday to deliberate.

The manslaughter charge against the suspect was dropped Tuesday because of a lack of evidence. The charge against Spence was then changed to assault causing bodily harm.

Both the Crown and defence attorneys made closing remarks Wednesday, which marked the trial’s eighth day.

The jury was excused from the courtroom following those closing submissions. The jury is expected to return to court Thursday, which is when the final deliberation process will begin.
