Environment Canada officials say January was definitely out of the ordinary in terms of winter weather averages for Thunder Bay.
The statistics show the mean temperature for January was -11.9C. That's three degrees warmer than normal, and it is mainly due to the warm spell that rolled in on Jan. 23 and 24.
The warm period brought the area rain, sleet, freezing rain and above-zero temperatures. The month also saw just a fraction of the normal snowfall, with 8.8 centimetres compared to the usual 41.
That's the lowest amount for January in Thunder Bay since the snowless winter of 2003.
