An American hunter who was missing over the weekend has been found safe, thirsty and hungry after being out in the bush for more than 36 hours.

Provincial police said the 63-year-old Kansas man was located Monday morning after he had been dropped off at a tree stand and did not return to the camp nearly 20 kilometres north of Gull Bay First Nation on Friday evening.

Police were contacted early Saturday morning after the hunter had failed to come back to the Hornick Road camp by the end of the evening.

The OPP's North West Region emergency response team and canine unit were deployed to the search for the missing hunter, who was found more than 24 hours later after he followed a sound beacon and exited the bush to walk to the command centre.

The man did not require any medical attention, but police reported that he was thirsty and hungry.
