Missing mail concerns prompt move to community mailboxes

Social services board makes change to improve security.

THUNDER BAY — Residents of several Thunder Bay District Social Services Administration Board properties will transition from door-to-door mail delivery to community mailboxes starting next week.

DSSAB consulted with Canada Post and decided to request the change after periodic concerns expressed by tenants that mail has gone missing or never arrived.

The homes affected by the change include DSSAB townhouse developments on James Street, John Street, Windsor Street, Blucher Avenue and Picton Avenue.

Ken Ranta, director of housing services for the board, says the new system will eliminate the risk of anyone accessing tenants' mail without their knowledge.

DSSAB went over the proposed change with its tenants at meetings and followed up with letters, and Ranta said there has been no negative feedback about the switch.

Canada Post is paying the full cost of the community mailboxes. The system is already in place at some other DSSAB housing sites.

The social services board operates a range of about 340 residential properties in Thunder Bay including large apartment buildings, houses and townhouse projects.
