DRYDEN, Ont. — Fire ranger crews in Northwestern Ontario are engaged in an ongoing battle with wildfires across the region.

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry reported eight new fires on Sunday,

None were larger than 1.5 hectares but the new outbreaks brought the number of active fires in the Northwest to 51.

Nearly half of these are listed as not under control, while 10 are being held, 13 are under control and four are being observed.

The MNRF says the fire hazard remains high to extreme near the U.S. border between Thunder Bay and Fort Frances, and moderate to low in most other parts of the region.
