More candidates file to run in municipal election

Current River Coun. Andrew Foulds, who has held the seat since 2006, will seek a fifth term in October. Marilyn Cully has joined what looks like it will be another crowded at-large race.

THUNDER BAY – The at-large race in the upcoming municipal election has grown to four.

Marilyn Cully is the latest candidate to put their name forward, joining Kasey Etreni, Iqbal Khan and Adetunde Ogunberu.No incumbents have yet to file, though long-time at-large candidate Rebecca Johnson has announced she won’t be running again in 2022.

Candidates have until Aug. 19 to file nomination papers.

In the mayor’s race, just two people have stepped forward. Gary Mack filed to run on May 9, while a month later Robert Szczepanski entered the race.
On Wednesday, current Mayor Bill Mauro announced he would not seek re-election after one term at the helm. Incumbent Andrew Foulds also filed his papers and will be seeking his fifth term on council representing Current River. To date he’s the lone candidate on the ballot in the ward.
In Red River, where long-time representative Brian McKinnon won’t seek re-election, Jason Veltri and James Dean Marsh are seeking to take over. Marsh finished third in Red River in 2014, while Veltri is a well-known activist and heads the Rainbow Collective.
In McKellar Ward, first-term councillor Brian Hamilton will have at least one opponent on the ballot, with Lori Paras filing to run.

In Northwood, three candidates have stepped forward, including Bill Dell, Dominic Pasqualino and Chris Krumpholz. Two-term incumbent Shelby Ch’ng, who was unsuccessful in her provincial election bid for the Liberals in Thunder Bay-Superior North, has yet to file papers and has said she is weighing her options in the Oct. 24 municipal election.
Alan Corbett is the lone candidate to file to run in Westfort.

​​​​​​​No one has yet entered the race in the Neebing or McIntyre wards.
In the English Public School Board Trustee contest, George Saarinen, Leah Vanderwey and Trudy Tuchenhagen have filed to run, while in the English Separate School Board Trustee race, Matt Pearson and Lawrence Badanai will be on the ballot.

Claudette Gleeson is the sole person to put in nomination papers in the French Separate School Board Trustee contest.
