Demand for the units in the proposed condominium building at the Thunder Bay Country Club has helped lead to a design change, said project developers to Thunder Bay city council.
Contractors for Club Residence Developments Inc. appeared before council on Monday evening requesting to amend the policies of the official plan to increase the number of dwelling units.
The initial plan outlined a proposal for 80 dwelling units, but the developers of the project were seeking an increase to 109, which council unanimously passed.
The increase will not change the height of the proposed six-storey building. Instead, planning consultant Syl Menic explained, the design of the building will be modified on the south end.
“The demand was there for more two-bedroom units so what we did was just square off the building,” Menic said. “That’s why we’re not really increasing the footprint but increasing the tax base.”
Coun. Iain Angus inquired about the status of the project, saying that he has heard many residents wonder about the timeline for completion.
Developers responded that 80 per cent of the building’s foundation have either been completed or are in progress, and added two stories of the building are underground.
