The dog days of December proved fruitful for the Thunder Bay and District Humane Society.

On Wednesday, CKPR radio morning show hosts Danny Foresta and Laura Zaina presented officials from the Rosslyn Road facility with a cheque for $17,669, the result of last Friday’s day-long fundraising effort at Performance Kia’s showroom.

The money will help the shelter keep its doors open well into the new year, weeks after announcing it might have to close its doors with creditors closing in and the threat of not being able to meet payroll.

TBDHS board member Brenda Remus said the donations, which have come from all corners of the city, have made a huge difference in their 2012 outlook.

“We’re so grateful to the community and all the businesspeople out there, and all the individuals, who have been helping us with this campaign. We’re able now to pay off some of our debts and go forward into the new year knowing we’ll be able to pay our staff,” Remus said.

She added they’ve hit the two-third mark in their monthly $15,000 sustainable donation program, at slightly more than $10,000 pledged, money that will be used to cover the facility’s estimated $400,000 operating cost.

“A lot of the forms are still out in the schools in the community and they’re coming in every day.  Cash donations, I’m not really sure, but I believe we have enough in reserve now to pay off all our creditors,” Remus said.
