THUNDER BAY - The northwest won’t be escaping winter’s grasp just yet, with heavy snow and freezing rain in the forecast.

Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for the possibility of heavy snowfall starting Tuesday night.

For communities near the shores of Lake Superior, including Thunder Bay, precipitation will likely begin as rain and turn to ice pellets or freezing rain by Wednesday morning, before eventually changing to snow throughout the day.

There is the possibility for heavy snowfall at times, particularly further north and in areas away from Lake Superior, with accumulations between 10 and 15 cenitmetres.

For communities closer to Lake Superior there could be ice pellet accumulation.

People are advised to monitor conditions and exercise caution while on area roadways.
