THUNDER BAY – After months of frustration that Ontario’s rollout of cannabis retail stores was passing Thunder Bay by, the city is now looking at a boom that could bring the total number of local stores to six.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) has opened a 15-day public notice period for two potential new cannabis stores in Thunder Bay: Canna Cabana at 572 Arthur Street West, and J. Supply Co. at 701 Memorial Avenue.

Canna Cabana would be located near the Seattle Coffeehouse and Monsoon restaurant on Arthur Street West. J. Supply Co. would be situated near the Power Centre, across from Mario’s Bowl on Memorial Avenue.

If approved, those would join Tokyo Smoke, already open on Memorial Avenue across from the Intercity mall; the Toke House in Westfort, who received their retail license last week; and Kia Ora, who got theirs in late February. The latter two still need to secure a retail store authorization for their locations, but hope to open in the coming weeks.

Kia Ora has also announced plans to seek approval for a second store on Red River. It would be the first one located in the city’s north end. General Manager Matt Harrison said their hope would be to open that second store in July, but the timeline will depend on the provincial regulatory process.
