THUNDER BAY — On the heels of an unusually hot July, forecasters say the Thunder Bay region can expect more pleasant weather for at least the first part of August.
Temperature records at Thunder Bay Airport show the average daily maximum last month was 27 C, compared with the long-term average of 24.2 C.
"Almost three degrees above normal, so a lot of very nice days in the month of July. Only one day saw a high that was below 20," Environment Canada meteorologist Peter Kimbell said, adding "People had lots of good days for heading out to camp or taking a swim in the lake."
Kimbell said the normal mean temperature for July is 17.6 C, but last month it soared to 20.0 C.
It's not a record but it's among the highest means over the last 100 years.
"For the people who can remember, 1921 saw a mean temperature of 20.8 in Thunder Bay. The years 2012 and 1955 also saw slightly higher means," Kimbell said.
The outlook for August is promising as well.
After a brief cooldown, temperatures will start to climb again starting Wednesday, and are expected to be above average through at least Monday.
