THUNDER BAY — An inquest that was scheduled to be held next month into the death of Indigenous artist Moses Beaver has been postponed.

Beaver, from Nibinamik First Nation in northwestern Ontario, died in February 2017 at the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre after he was transferred from the Thunder Bay District Jail.

A news release from the Ministry of the Solicitor General stated that the 56-year-old had been experiencing mental health issues prior to being taken into custody.

Dr. Michael Wilson, the regional supervising coroner, announced on  Wednesday that the inquest has been postponed to 2020 after input was received from involved parties.

When the original inquest date of Nov. 4, 2019 was announced earlier this year, the coroner's office said it expected to hear from 27 witnesses over a period of 15 days.
