Motel fire leads to arson charges

An Ottawa man has been charged with arson following a motel fire.

NIPIGON, Ont. – An early morning motel fire has landed a 27-year-old Ottawa man in jail.

Ontario Provincial Police received a call around 6:20 a.m. Sunday morning regarding a fire at a Nipigon motel.

Police say the fire was contained to a single room at the motel and was put out with the use of motel fire extinguishers.

The Nipigon Fire Department attended the scene to ensure the fire was extinguished.

As a result of the fire, there was extensive damage done to the room.

The investigation revealed that the fire was set intentionally and the occupant of the motel room was found walking eastbound on Highway 17 east of Nipigon.

The 27-year-old has been charged and held for bail.

The Office of the Ontario Fire Marshall has been notified and will attend the area for further examination of the scene.
