Motion will be heard Thursday into deaths of two First Nations men

The motion hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. on Thursday, Jan. 14.

THUNDER BAY — A motion will be heard Thursday relating to the deaths of two First Nations men who died while in police custody in 2014 and 2017.

In a news release issued by the province on Wednesday, Jan. 13, Dr. Michael Wilson, regional supervising coroner for the north region, announced a motion will be heard Thursday, Jan. 14, relating to the pending inquests into the deaths of Don Mamakwa and Roland Mckay.

Mamakwa, 44, died on Aug. 3, 2014 and McKay, 50, died on the night of July 19, 2019. Both men were in police custody at the time of their deaths. 

The hearing will begin at 9:30 a.m. and all parties will make their submissions remotely due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the release said.
