About 25 drivers are facing $110 fines for ignoring a road closure sign on River Street.
Thunder Bay Police say one side the roadway was shut down while Union Gas crews conducted work, but many motorists drove around the barricades and into oncoming traffic.
Notified of the situation, the traffic unit set up shop and spotted and ticketed the scofflaws who drove down the closed section of the street.
Police say the crews have shifted their work to Algoma Street in front of St. Joseph’s Hospital and are warning drivers not to disobey the closure signs.
“A head-on collision at or near the work hole would be catastrophic,” said Sgt. Glenn Porter in a release issued by Thunder Bay Police Service on Wednesday morning.
In addition to the fine, if convicted, drivers face a two-demerit penalty on their licence.
