THUNDER BAY – Laoui Msambya wasn't horsing around, he came to play.
The second-year guard made a lay-up at the buzzer to close out the fourth quarter to earn his team a second chance in overtime, then hit the game-winning lay-up at the buzzer to lead the Thunderwolves to a stunning 110-109 win over the No. 10 Western Mustangs at the C.J. Sanders Fieldhouse.
Msambya finished with a double-double, scoring 18 points while dishing out 11 assists to help lead the Wolves (3-5) close out the pre-Christmas portion of their schedule on a winning note.
Chris Sagl came off the bench to lead Lakehead with 20 points, one of seven players who hit double digits on the night.
Michael Okafor (15), Eric Gonzalez (13), Dylan Morrison (11), Jared Kreiner (11) and Nathan Bilamu (10) were the others.
They needed every point they could get against the Mustangs, who got 37 from Omar Shiddo for a second straight night, and 36 from Jerric Palma.
The Thunderwolves, who lost 88-85 on Friday night, led by eight at the half and made 39 of 72 shots from the field, including a dozen three-pointers, four by Sagl.
Fifth-place Lakehead returns to play on Jan. 21 at home against Windsor (2-4).
