MTO looking for feedback

MTO is looking for feedback on plans for a transportation strategy for Northern Ontario.

THUNDER BAY -- Ontario's Ministry of Transportation is asking for public feedback on plans for a 25-year transportation strategy for Northern Ontario.

At this open house, the MTO wanted to hear about what people need out of their regional transportation.

Several provincial officials were on-hand to collect feedback as the province works on their strategy.

When it's done, the Northern Ontario Multi-Modal Transportation Strategy will show how best to grow transport routes in the region.

That includes how highways, rail networks, and bus systems would be developed.

Ministry officials say it's critical that Northerners let them know if the Strategy is on the right track.

"Do we have the issues right," said MTO provincial planning officer manager Kelly Brown.

"Do we understand what we've heard already and what technical analysis is telling us, and that's the first question."

Brown added that reading the discussion paper, and providing input with what MTO has identified as some merging directions will help point them in the right direction.

"If we are not we need to regroup and draft a strategy that is based on the emerging directions that you're telling us.

Feedback is also accepted online, but more open houses are planned for the region, with one scheduled for Kenora on Wednesday.

The transportation strategy is expected to be completed sometime next year.
