THUNDER BAY — The Ministry of Transportation says the cause of a sinkhole that closed two lanes of Dawson Road at the intersection with the Thunder Bay Expressway on Monday remains unknown.
The 15-centimetre-wide hole was noticed shortly after an intense rainstorm Monday afternoon.
A worker at the scene estimated it was three metres deep.
It took a repair crew about 11 hours to excavate the road and lay down new fill.
According to a tweet from Ontario 511, the job was finished by 1:30 Tuesday morning.
An MTO spokesperson said staff from the City of Thunder Bay's sewer and water services were on site to help determine the cause of the sinkhole, but it has not been established so far.
One of the westbound lanes of Dawson Road will be closed again on Friday, when new asphalt is scheduled to be laid down over the repair site.
