This past weekend the ThunderBolts hit the Canada Games Complex Swimming Pool at the Tbaytel Deck Dash Time Trial.  This was the last opportunity for swimmers to qualify for the Prairie Winter Invitation Swim Meet in Winnipeg Dec. 16 to 19, 2021.  The Thunderbolts didn’t disappoint.  Out of the water for the better part of two years the Bolts hit the water with a vengeance.

“This was the perfect preparation for our swimmers heading to Winnipeg,” stated a very satisfied Head Coach John McLeod.” I was really happy and impressed how our coaches challenged and motivated our swimmers to excel. Our club is firmly back on its feet after two challenging years,” added Mcleod.

The ThunderBolts will be sending 34 ThunderBolts to the Prairie Winter Invitation,  This is over half of the competitive team and the largest team being sent to Winnipeg in some time.

Ten-year-old Taylor Brown, one of the youngest ThunderBolt swimmer to qualify for PWI could hardly contain her excitement, “ I am a bit surprised and super happy.  I thought I might qualify in a 100 meter distance so when I qualified in a 200 meter backstroke I was over the moon.  The PWI meet will be my biggest competition I have been at- I am really looking forward to racing other swimmers from across the country.”

Three swimmers, in particular, had an extraordinary weekend breaking a total of nine ThunderBolt club records.  Sam Chisholm, Kaitlyn Luu and Matthew Foulds broke a variety of club records, some as old as 20 years.

Assistant head Coach Andy Ritchie summed up the weekend racing, “We are extremely pleased with the progress of the swimmers in the Discovery, Junior and Senior Development groups.”  Assistant coaches Hulina and Balabuk  further stated, “the weekend of racing was fantastic, getting official times and preparing for the first out town swim meet in two years.  There are lots of good things ahead for the ThunderBolts.”
