The following information has been provided by the City of Thunder Bay:
November 6, 2014 – A multi-use trail along the West side of Golf Links Road is officially open.
The new trail runs along Golf Links Road, between Oliver Road and the Harbour Expressway. All trail signage is in place.
“This multi-use trail is an important part of the City’s overall Active Transportation Plan,” said Project Engineer Rick Harms. “Golf Links Road is an important conduit for those travelling throughout Thunder Bay, and the completion of this new trail is a key step in our efforts to extend active transportation trails throughout Thunder Bay.”
The trail is 1.6 kilometres long and 3 meters wide. It features Thunder Bay’s first pedestrian and cyclist crossrides at the entrances to the businesses along the West side of Golf Links Road.
Crossrides are designed for use by cyclists and pedestrians in areas where a multi-use trail intersects with a driveway or roadway. Crossrides are marked and elevated to allow for better visibility of any pedestrians or cyclists making use of them.
The trail is only for non-motorized use and parking on the trail is prohibited. New barrier swing arms at trail entrances prevent motorized vehicles from accessing the trail.
The trail was completed as part of Phase One of the Golf Links Road/Junot Avenue Corridor improvement project. Phase Two will see the trail extended farther North, where it will merge with the existing trail network near John Street.
