Multiple charges laid after "large fight" in Fort Frances park

Accused man is charged with assault and uttering threats

FORT FRANCES, Ont. — Ontario Provincial Police have released details of a recent violent incident in a municipal park.

On Friday, July 13, officers from the Rainy River District detachment responded to what an OPP news release describes as "a large fight with a weapon involved" at Point Park on the eastern edge of town.

Police said an altercation had taken place between an area resident and a number of people who had been camping in the park.

Two people suffered minor injuries.

After a search for the suspect, OPP arrested a 38-year-old Couchiching First Nation man the next day.

He faces multiple charges:

  • five counts of uttering threats
  • two counts of assault with a weapon
  • two counts of possession of a dangerous weapon
  • failure to comply with a recognizance
  • failure to comply with probation

The accused man remains in custody pending a court appearance Thursday in Fort Frances.
