THUNDER BAY — Ontario Provincial Police arrested a 19-year-old man following a vehicle theft that led to a pursuit in the Nipigon-Red Rock area.

The incident began early Friday morning when the Thunder Bay detachment received a report that a vehicle had been stolen from a business on Arthur Street in the city.

It was observed being driven east at high speed on Highway 11/17.

OPP from the Nipigon detachment subsequently spotted the vehicle near the Highway 628 intersection, and unsuccessfully attempted to make a traffic stop.

The vehicle was finally stopped after police used a spike belt to deflate its tires, but the driver exited and fled.

Following a ground search involving the OPP K9 unit and Emergency Response Team, a suspect was taken into custody.

A resident of Geraldton faces charges of dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, impaired driving, flight from police, theft of a motor vehicle and driving without a licence.

He was held for a bail hearing and remanded into custody.
