THUNDER BAY – Problematic driving behaviours resulted in nearly 250 charges being laid during a recent enforcement blitz.
According to a release issued on Thursday by Thunder Bay Police, the two-day Spring into Enforcement operation resulted in seven stunt drivers caught driving more than 40 kilometres over the speed limit in roadways with speed limits of 50 kilometres per hour or less.
Officers handed out 151 speeding tickets to motorists driving 20 kilometres an hour or more over the speed limit, 14 more for motorists who did not slow down or move over for emergency vehicles, six distracted driving charges and charged four people for driving without insurances.
One vehicle was removed from the roadway for being unfit to drive and 31 people received court summons for various offences.
One motorist caught stunt driving was clocked doing more than 90 kilometres an hour on Balmoral Street, prior to 8 a.m., leading to multiple charges, including operation of a motor vehicle while impaired and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle.
Police say they have experienced an increase in high-speed motorists, particular ones considered to be stunt driving, in the first quarter of 2025. They also remind the driving public that as temperatures rise, more people will be outside walking and reaction time decreases with greater speed.
“Road safety is a shared responsibility, and a split second delay in reaction time due to excessive speed, inattention, or an unfit vehicle can have catastrophic consequences for other road users,” the release reads.
