Murder suspect appears in court

Kecia Spade, 18, arrived at the provincial courthouse in handcuffs Wednesday to set a date to face her first-degree murder charge. Spade was charged last year following the death of Mariah Wesley, 18, also from Michkeegogamang First Nations.

Kecia Spade, 18, arrived at the provincial courthouse in handcuffs Wednesday to set a date to face her  first-degree murder charge.

Spade was charged last year following the death of Mariah Wesley, 18, also from Michkeegogamang First Nations. After a few minutes, the judge remanded her to adjourned the proceedings to June 3.

Police originally charged Spade with second-degree murder but later upgraded the charge to first degree in November 2009. Spade, a member of the Michkeegogamang First Nations near Pickle Lake, is accused of stabbing Wesley.

Officers responded to a call on Nov. 8, 2009 and arrived to find Wesley lying in the street suffering from stab wounds. Wesley was pronounced dead at the scene.

Spade remains in custody at the Thunder Bay Youth Facility.
