A Thunder Bay murder suspect has avoided going to trial, after pleading guilty to manslaughter in connection with another young man's death.

Jessie Patrick George, 21, was originally charged with aggravated assault after an incident in a laneway off Victoria Avenue in April 2009. The victim, 19-year-old Joseph Kakeway suffered serious injuries and died in a hospital 10 days later.

The charge against George was upgraded to second-degree murder. Both the suspect and the victim resided at Shelter House at the time.

George has been in custody ever since his arrest, and has now agreed to plead guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter.

A sentencing hearing has been scheduled for Oct. 19 at the Superior Court of Justice in Thunder Bay.
