TORONTO — Nishnawbe Aski Nation has signed Memorandums of Understanding with municipal partners to work jointly on poverty and homelessness issues in northern Ontario communities.

The agreements with the Kenora District Services Board and the Cochrane District Social Services Administration Board were signed Wednesday during the NAN chiefs spring assembly in Toronto.

According to a joint statement, the parties will cooperate "to address priority areas to ensure adequate housing for all families and individuals."

They will also explore joint initiatives "that will result in the reduction of poverty and homelessness" while improving health outcomes for clients.

Barry Baltessen, chair of the Kenora DSSB, said the outcomes of the MOU will be "momentous" for families and communities in the Kenora district.

"Safe, adequate and affordable housing is an essential right for everyone," Baltessen said.

Walter Naveau, NAN Deputy Grand Chief, said he's pleased to work with the municipal partners to reduce poverty and establish adequate housing "for our members who live in urban areas."
