NAN conference seeks Far North energy solution

Nishnawbe Aski Nation officials say the reliance of Far North communities on diesel power generation is their greatest energy challenge.

Nishnawbe Aski Nation officials say the reliance of Far North communities on diesel power generation is their greatest energy challenge.

Chiefs from NAN's 49 communities will meet in Thunder Bay starting Tuesday to begin to develop an energy strategy. The meeting takes place at the Valhalla Inn.

Deputy Grand Chief Les Louttit says they want communities to ditch the diesel and get on an energy grid.

“(Alternative energy sources) will have to be constructed in the future,” Louttit told CKPR Radio Monday. “There are a lot of local projects that can be developing renewable energy.”

Right now, more than 20 communities in the far north use diesel-generated power as their main source of electricity.

The conference takes place at the Valhalla Inn starting Tuesday.
