The Nishnawbe Aski Police Service has a new chief of police.
Terry Armstrong will be the new NAPS chief as of Sept. 3, succeeding Robert Herman, who has been the acting police chief since January.
Armstrong has spent most of his policing career with the OPP in Northwestern Ontario and has also served as a First Nation Constable in Pikangikum and acting police chief of the Lac Seul Police Service.
He retired from the OPP in 2010 and became the deputy chief of operations for the Treaty Three Police Service.
NAPS board of directors chairman Frank McKay said in a media release that Armstrong has extensive experience in a variety of operational and administrative areas and has an in-depth knowledge of the issues and challenges facing First Nations policing.
"I am confident that his expertise, leadership and dedication to First Nations policing will be a tremendous asset to NAPS and the communities we serve," said McKay.
