THUNDER BAY – Natural Gas customers in this region should expect to pay a bit more to heat their homes this winter.
The Ontario Energy Board has approved a rate increase for Union Gas and other suppliers.
In the Northwest it will likely mean a hike of up to about $40 a year. Customers can expect to see bills featuring the newly adjusted rate next month, as they officially take effect Oct. 1.
The $40 increase is expected to be the provincial average.
According to a news release issued by the utility, the rate change comes in response to market fluctuations and what the utility expects it will pay to deliver its service.
"Customers who heat their home and water with natural gas save $1,600 to $2,000 every year for the average home compared to using electricity, oil or propane," said Mark Isherwood, vice-president, sales, marketing and customer care, Union Gas.
"Choosing affordable and reliable natural gas makes good sense."
