THUNDER BAY – Canada’s Naval Reserve will conduct a small-boat exercise in waterways around Thunder Bay over the weekend.

Dubbed exercise Waking Giant, the training activities will include pyrotechnic demonstrations, and could involve the use of unloaded firearms by military personnel, it noted.

The exercise, planned for Saturday and Sunday, will see participation from over 150 sailors, soldiers, and aviators from throughout the Canadian Armed Forces, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard.

It will be led by the local HMCS Griffon Naval Reserve Division.

The small boat Exercise will begin with a safe passage ceremony from Opwaaganisning First Nation, also known as the Red Rock Indian Band.

Activities will be conducted in the Port of Thunder Bay, Amethyst Bay, the Kaministiquia River, and Little Trout Bay, the Naval Reserve said.
