KENORA – The Kenora Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) is pleased to announce there is another addition to the Canine Unit in the Northwest Region. 

Provincial Constable Jeff Poperechny along with Jax, have welcomed a General Search and Rescue (GSAR) dog to the team.

Cinch is a two year old yellow lab and his role is to search for lost or missing people. Cinch has the ability to track or search offline utilizing a GPS collar. P/C Poperechny and Cinch trained together in Gravenhurst and Orillia Ontario for 10 weeks.

Jax on the other hand is a General Service Dog. His purpose is tracking or searching for wanted persons. He is utilized in situations that are criminal in nature and are at a higher level of risk to the public and police safety.

OPP canine handlers have to have a minimum three years of policing experience, possess a high degree of self-discipline and patience, a favorable attitude towards animals and they must be in top physical condition. OPP canine teams are on call 24 hours a day for assignments anywhere in Ontario.
