THUNDER BAY -- A man charged with manslaughter in connection with the discovery of a body in the McIntyre River made his first court appearance Tuesday.

Lawrence Beardy, 24, appeared in the Ontario Court of Justice Tuesday for a bail hearing. Justice John Guthrie approved the request from a representative for defense lawyer Richard Curtis to adjourn Beardy’s hearing.

The matter will return to court Tuesday Aug. 16.

The Criminal Investigations Branch of the Thunder Bay Police Service charged a Thunder Bay man in connection with the death of 38-year-old Clayton Chuck Mawakeesic, whose body was discovered on July 29 in the McIntyre Floodway near Waterford Street.

It was alleged that there had been an altercation between the victim and the accused, who were known to each other, just prior to his death.

The accused was arrested just after 3 p.m. on Aug. 5 in the vicinity of Carrick and Waterford Streets.

He has been remanded into custody with a court date of Aug. 16.
