The Northwestern Health Unit announced three new confirmed cases of COVID-19 Friday.

KENORA – The Northwestern Health Unit has confirmed three new confirmed cases of COVID-19, all involving individuals in its Kenora region.

Public health authorities were following up with the individuals and their contacts, the health unit said as it announced the cases via social media Friday.

The NWHU’s large Kenora region encompasses over 20 communities. The health unit does not release more specific geographic data on the location of new cases, citing privacy concerns.

There were eight active cases of COVID-19 in the NWHU’s catchment area as of Wednesday, the most recent data made available by the health unit, two of which were in the Kenora region.

There were another six active cases in the Rainy River region.

Those figures did not include the three cases announced Friday.

The health unit reported the first death attributed to COVID-19 in its catchment area on Wednesday. According to the NWHU, the individual was elderly and had pre-existing medical conditions.
