THUNDER BAY - A new health centre in the downtown southcore opened its doors Tuesday.
The Joseph Esquega Health Centre has three physicians offering primary care, but it also specializes in addiction treatment.
The centre on East Donald Street has been in the works for some time. The doctors and staff who run it have identified a need in the surrounding community.
It was recently reported that opioid related death and addiction in Thunder Bay is on the rise. The centre's Medical Directer, Dr. Cheryl Everall says they are bringing in specialized doctors to better understand the issues that face the area, and they'll be running programs to best address the needs of the community.
She says they chose this location for specific reasons.
Everall says they plan to identify the specific needs in the community, who the affected people are, and how they can best be helped.
