Thunder Bay has a lot of walks for a lot of good causes.
There are so many in fact that this year Volunteer Thunder Bay decided to turn its annual Mayor’s Walk into a hike instead. Around 50 hikers hit the trails at Centennial Park exploring three five or 10 kilometres of the local landmark. Pledges raised were split evenly between Volunteer Thunder Bay and a charity of the hiker’s choice.
“It’s kind of a win-win for everybody,” Volunteer Thunder Bay executive director Deborah Poole-Hofmann said.
The event also dovetails nicely with National Hiking Day and the city’s current Parks and Recreation month.
“I really feel that there are a lot of parks in Thunder Bay that aren’t utilized enough, especiialy Centennial Park,” Poole-Hofmann said.
Although the sun was out Sunday morning, a lot of hikers weren’t due to the cold weather.
“We had a few people turn out with their pledge forms and then go home but there are a few die-hards,” Poole-Hofmann said.
Coun. Rebecca Johnson was one of those die-hards. Representing mayor Keith Hobbs while he’s out of town, Johnson said the city is lucky to have a park like Centennial so close to home.
“We’re very fortunate,” she said.
