A new leadership conference has a date set but no location.
That’s because it will all be hosted online. The two-day Northern Ontario Leadership Conference begins April 2 and will be the first virtual conference in Northern Ontario, bringing together industry and political leaders along with a host of experts.
Organizer Frank Roch said it’s a great way to gather people together in a cost effective way.
“Those speakers and attendees will be able to participate from the comfort of their home or office,” he said on a conference call Tuesday morning.
“One of the biggest problems in an areas vast as Northern Ontario is to get everybody at the same place at the same time especially when you’re trying to get people from different sectors.”
Those sectors include business, mining, health care, education, technology, economic development and social services.
“Our goal is to create conversations that will hopefully continue long after the NOLC,” Roch said.
Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren, who is chairing the event, hopes those conversations lead to solutions for tackling common challenges in the North.
His city will need around $100 million in infrastructure over the next decade, a common problem across the region.
“Those are huge. The solution to that is government participation at all levels,” he said. “I don’t think we can continue to go in front of government always with our hand out. I think we have to be able to go to government with ideas and solutions.”
Laughren also hopes to discuss how to maximize economic development through mining and forestry.
