Lakehead University is reaching out to its neighbours in an effort to make new learning opportunities.
The school signed a memorandum of understanding with Georgian College Wednesday morning that will see the two schools, both with campuses in Orillia, work together to recruit international students, create new Aboriginal programs and develop distance education.
Lakehead University president Brian Stevenson said the schools are trying to make it as easy as possible for students to transfer credits and programs between college and university.
"The students have more options and can save more money," he said after inking the deal in Thunder Bay.
Stevenson said it's just the beginning of a long process that the schools hope will make it easier for students.
Georgian president Marylynn West-Moynes said it would be much easier for schools to operate in isolation but partnerships are better for everybody.
"It makes sense that we provide access for students," she said.
The schools are starting to operate with hybrid models for delivering programs.
West-Moynes said technology allows students the opportunity to learn anywhere while still using conventional classrooms for lab work and other hands-on experiences.
