THUNDER BAY – The City of Thunder Bay has activated two new pedestrian crossovers, one at Shuniah Street and Huron Avenue, and another at Edward Street and Isabella Street.

The city has now installed 17 of the crossovers since launching the first in 2016, when a change to Ontario’s Highway Traffic Act allowed municipalities to take the step.

Motorists and cyclists must stop for pedestrian traffic at the crossovers when lights begin flashing, and must not enter the crossover until the pedestrian has completed their crossing.

The crossovers are installed mid-block or at intersections where traffic is elevated, but not high enough to warrant a traffic light.

The city recently removed a crossing guard around the Shuniah Street and Huron Avenue location, citing very low student traffic.

More information about pedestrian crossovers is available at the city’s website.
