THUNDER BAY — The Northern Ontario School of Medicine's medical physics residency education program has received full accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation of Medical Physics Education Programs.

The program was established only recently.

Medical physicists are health-care professionals who receive specialized training in the medical applications of physics.

Their work involves the use of x-rays, ultrasound, magnet and electric fields, infrared and ultraviolet light, heat and lasers in diagnosis and therapy.

Most work in cancer treatment centres, hospital diagnostic imaging departments or hospital-based research facilities.

Faculty members at NOSM's campuses in Thunder Bay and Sudbury provide training in collaboration with local hospitals.

During the course of the program, one resident in Thunder Bay and one in Sudbury are formal full-time employees of the respective academic health sciences centres.

Two new residents will be recruited for terms that start in October 2019.

They will enroll in a two-year program that covers all aspects of the clinical subspecialty of Radiation Oncology Physics.

The minimum entry requirement for a residency position is  Master of Science in Medical Physics.
