THUNDER BAY -- During the summer months, racing enthusiasts flock to the Northwest to participate in the various stock-car races held throughout the region.

Now a project to bring auto racing to the city of Kenora is getting closer to fruition.

Auto racing is a pastime for many residents across Northwestern Ontario for both spectators and drivers.

In Kenora, a local entrepreneur is hoping to bring the thrill of the speedway to his community.

For the past several years Anthony Leek has been working with landowners and contractors to build the Lake of the Woods Speedway.

He says with Kenora becoming more of a tourist town, racing will expand the demographic of visitors to the community.

“It’s really important Kenora continues to diversify those entertainment options and I think motorsports are something engrained in the community,” Leek said.

“There hasn’t been a venue for it and I think there’s been a lot of good foresight from the owner of the property and the contractor to make this happen because we’ve seen that before and we want to see it become something.”

Leek says he is hoping to have an event take place at the track this fall.
