THUNDER BAY -- The local New Year's baby arrived 11 days before he was expected.
Evan John Hearn was born at 2:06 p.m. New Year's Day after mother Caley Vrastak spent New Year's Eve in labour.
"I'm exhausted. I wasn't prepared to have him this early," Vrastak said.
"We were staying at my sister's in town and I was having bad contractions and constantly kept waking up. We came back (to the hospital) after a couple of hours and I was in so much pain. Eventually, I came back and I was six centimetres dilated and ready to pretty much start.
After nearly 24 hours in labour, the boy was born at 8 pounds., 7 ounces. and 52.5 centimetres in length.
Evan will be the first grandchild for both sides of the family. Vrastak's mother gave him his first name and his middle name was that of his grandfather on his father's side.
Father Brandon Hearn was a little overwhelmed with all the attention that comes with having the New Year's baby, more excited about parenting and taking on the new challenge in life for his family.
"At first, we didn't really realize it was this big of a thing but we're pretty excited," he said.
