THUNDER BAY —  COVID-19 has forced the cancellation of the traditional New Year's Day Levee at the O'Kelly Armoury in Thunder Bay.

The annual event typically sees the local military gather with community members to toast the Queen and celebrate the turning of the calendar.

The tradition has its roots in 17th century Quebec, when the governor of New France used it discuss plans for the colony, discuss events back in the home country, and receive pledges of allegiance to the Crown.

British colonial governors continued the tradition.

On Jan. 1, 2020, the levee in Thunder Bay held even more significance than usual, as it was used to launch the celebration of the City of Thunder Bay's 50th anniversary.

Ontario Lieutenant-Governor Elizabeth Dowdeswell was the guest of honour.
