THUNDER BAY — The next phase of the Balmoral Street reconstruction is now underway, with work beginning on the multi-use recreational trail.
The work will be taking place between the bridge over the Neebing/McIntyre Floodway and Cameron Street.
The multi-use recreational trail, similar to the trail network already completed along the route, will be laid on the east side of Balmoral Street.
Following the completion of the recreation trail, asphalt resurfacing will begin, which will result in some lane closures.
“I imagine this project will take two months. During the initial phases, we will be doing the trail work so there won’t be much impact to traffic,” said Matthew Miedema, manager of engineering with the City of Thunder Bay.
“There may be some lane closures here and there, but primally they will be focusing on the trail. As we get to paving, expect some delays and reduced traffic lanes in the month ahead.”
A north and south lane will remain open during resurfacing work.
“We are still planning to keep two lanes of traffic, so one lane in each direction,” Miedema said.
“So it will be open but reduced travel lanes. Just be patient. The contractor is here to do work safely and efficiently. We appreciate the patience at this time.”
The estimated cost of this phase of the reconstruction is $2 million. Future phases extending to Victoria Avenue and Arthur Street are yet to be budgeted.
