NIPIGON - A Nipigon man facing a series of charges including possessing illegal explosive substances among other offences was denied bail by a Thunder Bay Justice of the Peace on Friday.

Steven Mahoney, 37, was charged by Ontario Provincial Police in late April for one count of possession of an explosive substance, three counts of possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000, possession of a prohibited weapon, possession of a modified shotgun, storing a prohibited firearm in a careless manner,  failing to comply with a probation order and possessing a firearm while being prohibited from doing so.

Crown and defence lawyers presented submissions at Mahoney’s bail hearing on Friday, May 8, to Justice of the Peace Denette Ellard on whether or not he should be released from custody as he awaits a trial.

Evidence presented at Mahoney’s bail hearing including reasons for his detention are protected by a temporary publication ban.

Judges and justices of the peace can detain accused persons for several reasons including if an individual is likely to re-offend or if there is a chance an accused will not show up to their next court date.

Mahoney was charged with these offences on April 22 and was brought into custody on May 5.

Mahoney also has outstanding charges from November 2019 where he faces one count of possession of a switchblade and one count of possession of methamphetamine.

Mahoney is slated to appear back in court on Friday, May 15, to be spoken to.
