Nipigon Town Council has decided community input is important on whether to be part of a nuclear waste management program.
On Tuesday night, the town council decided that holding town hall meetings and information kiosks would be vital as the community decides what role it may play in managing nuclear waste.
Economic Development Officer Sarah Lewis said there are many reasons why they need to hear from the community on this issue.
“It seems that with the number of communities within Northwestern Ontario that are expressing interest in being part of the site selection process, we may be part of a transportation corridor,” Lewis told CKPR Radio during a phone interview.
“It could be one of our neighbours (taking on) this project.”
Nipigon Coun. James Folds said there were good reasons behind the town council’s decision to hold town hall meetings and information kiosks.
“Nuclear waste is going to be deposited somewhere, and there seems to be interest in this area and also to the west of us,” he said.
“We just look at our transportation route and it looks like there is a possibility, even if it’s not contained within Nipigon, it could be passing through our community.”
