No bags? Kraft paper bags required for yard waste suddenly hard to find

THUNDER BAY -- The City of Thunder Bay's leaf and yard waste pick-up begins on Tuesday.

Residents are required to use Kraft paper bags this year. But some residents are having a hard time finding those kind of bags in local stores.

The city changed the rules this year, banning plastic bags for leaf and yard waste at the landfill. The city has instead been promoting paper bags, and have hosted several free giveaways.

But the city has now run out and apparently, so have numerous local stores. Home Depot, the Superstore, and Safeway all had empty shelves at some point this week.

The Manager of Solid Waste Diversion & Recycling, Jason Sherband, says they warned the stores in August about the new city policy. He spoke to them again on Monday, after hearing about the shortages.

Sherband calls it a "learning curve", and he expects all of them to have Kraft bag shipments arrive later this week. The free Leaf and Yard Waste pick-up runs from Nov. 3 to the 13.
