Thunder Bay Police Service Media Release

The Thunder Bay Police Service has concluded a review of the December 5, 2016 demonstration which was in support of the Standing Rock environmental movement.

The TBPS will not be pursing any charges against the organizers or participants of the event. Traffic flow in the area of the demonstration was managed by TBPS officers to minimize disruptions for motorists. The demonstration was peaceful and lasted just over one hour.

TBPS Inspector Dan Taddeo was incident commander at the scene on December 5, 2016 and conducted a review of the incident regarding any possible charges.

"Our primary concern was public safety. Steps were taken to ensure that no one was put in any danger as a result of the demonstration."

Inspector Taddeo described the review of the incident as "a comprehensive look at the merits of charges. In view of the peaceful nature and minimal impact, charges were not deemed as necessary."

Similar demonstrations were held across the country that day. The TBPS is not aware of any charges laid provincially by police regarding these incidents.
