While no fines were issued, one company will have to pay the $10,000 cost of the investigation into a major gas leak on Red River Road.
City workers struck a pipeline on the busy north-end street this past summer, which led to an evacuation of the area. A four-month investigation by the Technical Standards and Safety Authority concluded that G-Tel Engineering, a company that marked where the line was, marked the line in the wrong location.
As a result, the company will have a full-time quality assurance person in Thunder Bay from now on.
Union Gas, while not at fault, was ordered to take reasonable precautions in the future.
"The orders really directed G-Tel to follow proper procedures and for Union Gas to take reasonable precautions and for the technician to obviously mark the locate properly," TSSA spokesman Wilson Lee said.
The $10,500 cost of the investigation was billed to G-Tel.
As for fines, Lee said the companies have good safety records.
The TSSA didn't feel that fines were necessary.
