THUNDER BAY — A sign planted in front of their house has left a Thunder Bay couple bewildered.
Paul Wiseman and his wife left their McAuliffe Crescent home briefly to run some errands Tuesday afternoon.
When they returned, they found a sign bearing the slogan No More Lockdowns had been placed on the boulevard.
Wiseman believes it may be linked to what he describes as a right-wing radical group that opposes government-imposed restrictions related to COVID-19.
He did a Google search and landed on the website of an organization he'd never heard of "that doesn't believe in COVID, and they're sick and tired of people being locked down, wearing masks and all that kind of stuff."
It's upsetting to him, Wiseman said, because that's not his perspective at all.
"I'm just dumbfounded that people in Canada have this point of view, locally as well, with the number of deaths we've had in Thunder Bay, and the number of infections we've had. It's ridiculous that somebody has that kind of mindset when there's tragedy going on with this pandemic."
Wiseman has no idea why the sign was even brought to his neighbourhood, which is in the John Street/Golf Link Roads area.
"I can't see anybody [here] having those views but I can't speak for my neighbours."
He said it's "brazen" to put this kind of sign in front of someone's home without asking for permission, and speculates it was either just a random act, or someone gave the perpetrator the wrong address.
A different sign, apparently linked to another group with concerns about Canada's response to COVID-19, has been posted on Highway 61 near Gilllespie Road.
The sign reads Masks. Distancing. Lockdowns. Are they working?
It bears the web address of Vaccine Choice Canada, a group that says it was formed in response to parental concerns about the safety of vaccination programs in Canada.
